Five reasons why teens should care about the body positivity movement

1. It impacts everyone

The body positivity movement seeks to shift the long lasting societal belief that tells us our worth is tied to our body's size, shape, and physical capabilities. By shifting this narrative, not only are we lifting ourselves up, but those around us -- not to mention the many generations that will come after.

2. It's more important than ever (especially with eating disorder hospitalizations on the rise)

Covid-19 skyrocketed a lot of things, and eating disorder hospitalizations are no exception. This is a sign that today's teens are overwhelmingly struggling with taking care of their own bodies, mental and physical, as well as feeling confident in their own bodies.

So, let's take this as a sign that self-love, acceptance, and body image are topics more relevant than ever. Therefore, it's crucial that we start talking about it now, rather than later when we see the ramifications.

It's still taboo...

You read it right. As much as we hate to admit it, body positivity is still a taboo subject and hard to talk about for many. But, by starting the conversation around it and talking about its ramifications more with each other, we as a society can begin to realize how important it is to love ourselves and why it matters.

Schools don't teach it

Sure, health classes exist, but oftentimes they do more harm than good by teaching kids to label certain foods as "healthy, and others as "foods to avoid". The body positivity movement, however, fills in for what schools are missing out on. This is the raw fact that each and every body is different and requires different amounts of food and active exercise.

Most importantly, it teaches us to honor our body's cravings! That's because no one is perfect and, let's be for real, life without sugar is pretty painful.

5. We CAN make a change

The more we, as the new generation, take a step to promote the acceptance of our unique bodies, the less body-toxic future generations will be. WE are the example, and WE have the responsibility to take action and make sure that everyone feels safe, accepted, and loved.
